Festivals and citywide design events in Toronto
The season’s anchor is the Toronto Biennial of Art, whose fourth edition is titled “Things Fall Apart” and is curated by Allison Glenn. It runs 26 September to 20 December across the city, with the Art Museum at the University of Toronto as its hub, and it is free. Twelve weeks is long enough that you do not need to rush it, which is unusual for this city.
Nuit Blanche marks its 20th anniversary on the night of 3 October, running from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m. on the 4th under the theme “Tomorrow’s Memories.” Zones and commissioned artists had not been published when this guide was last checked, so watch the city’s page rather than trusting a secondhand map.
Two more worth knowing: TIFF runs 10 to 20 September, which matters for design because of what it does to restaurant and hotel bookings downtown, and the Design Leadership Summit takes over TIFF Bell Lightbox from 17 to 19 November.
What is not happening this autumn is a design week. Toronto loads that into January: DesignTO, the country’s largest design festival, runs 22 to 31 January 2027 with more than a hundred free exhibitions, and the Interior Design Show returns to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre the same month. Treat autumn as art-fair season and January as design season.
Museums and exhibitions
MOCA reinstalls all three floors on 3 October and keeps them until 14 February 2027: Hugh Hayden on the first floor in his first Canadian solo show, Delcy Morelos on the second with a site-specific commission in soil and grain, and Bharti Kher on the third. That is the single strongest reason to be in the Junction Triangle this autumn.
The AGO closes The Impressionist Revolution: Monet to Matisse on 18 October, so that one is now a deadline rather than a plan. Melissa Auf der Maur: My ’90s Rock Photographs opens to the public on 8 September and runs into June 2027, and Sunday Best: The Power and The Glory of Black Style opens to the general public on 13 October and runs to 28 February 2027.
The ROM is carrying the widest slate. BEES: A Story of Survival runs to 18 October, Psychedelics: Art. Culture. Science. to December, and Crawford Lake: Layers in Time, Critical Minerals: Critical Choices and the Year of the Horse zodiac case all run into January 2027. Wildlife Photographer of the Year opens on 7 November. Two shows, Shokkan and Connection Stations, close on 7 September, so they need a September visit rather than an October one.
The Aga Khan Museum hosts a Biennial installation of its own, Dawit L. Petros’s Emergent Formations, which opened in July and runs all the way to April 2027, well past the festival’s own December close. Saks Afridi: SpaceMosque opens 24 October. Game On! and the Hassan Hajjaj show both close 7 September.
One note for anyone hunting a design museum: there isn’t one. The Design Exchange deaccessioned its entire collection in 2019 and now operates as a rentable event venue, which leaves Canada without a national design museum. Read the ROM and MOCA as the substitutes.
Markets and fairs
Art Toronto is the big one, in its 27th year at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre from 29 October to 1 November, with an opening night on the 29th and public days from the 30th. More than a hundred galleries, and the best single afternoon of the year for seeing what Canadian collectors are actually buying.
For makers and gift buying, the One of a Kind Christmas Show fills the Enercare Centre from 27 November to 6 December with more than 800 Canadian artisans.
Note for anyone working from an older guide: the Toronto Outdoor Art Fair ran in July and is finished for the year, and the Toronto Art Book Fair is no longer running at all.
Awards and industry dates
The ARIDO Awards gala is on 17 September at Meridian Hall, and this year drops the sit-down dinner for a theatre-style format seating around a thousand. VIP reception at 5 p.m., awards at 7, after-party at 9.
The deadlines that actually affect your year are DesignTO’s. Independent Projects for the 2027 festival close on 9 October at 11.59 p.m. ET, with an early-bird discount if you submit by 31 August, and listing details due 23 October. The separate call to activate Yonge and St. Clair closes 13 September and carries $5,000 to $7,500 in project funding. Several other DesignTO calls are open with dates still to be announced.
Two negatives worth stating plainly, because guides tend to keep listing them: the AZ Awards 2026 cycle closed in February and no 2027 call has been published, and the OAA Design Excellence Awards are biennial, so there is no 2027 round.
